The Dunning Family

“On August 25th we took our 5-week-old daughter Wrenley into the Alberta Children’s Hospital with mild work of breathing. Not long after arrival, she was diagnosed with RSV. She was placed on oxygen and admitted.

Over the next 30 hours, her condition rapidly declined. She was struggling with every breath and the decision was made to move her to the PICU. After CPAP failed at stabilizing her, they had no choice but to intubate her.

While intubated, her labs came back that she also had Adenovirus which made her situation even more severe. While ventilated, she had multiple desats where she turned purple and required quick intervention. One of her events resulted in a cardiac arrest. I watched in horror as a nurse performed CPR on our tiny baby. As she began to improve, they decided to try extubating. Unfortunately, she contracted pneumonia and needed to be intubated a second time. She was intubated for 10 days total.

While in the PICU, Katie from Hope4MVC kids reached out offering support. They helped with fuel, food and parking. This help allowed my husband to take the month off and care for our 2-year-old as well as make daily trips to visit Wrenley. Wrenley’s stay ended up being a month long. Her respiratory therapy was 2.5 weeks with the remaining duration focusing on her withdrawal symptoms and feeding issues.

We are so thankful for everything Hope 4 MVC Kids did for us during such a horrible time.”
